Top prosecutor refers first lady's luxury bag gift case to review committee

Prosecutor General Lee One-seok has referred the case of first lady Kim Keon Hee's acceptance of a luxury bag to a review committee, following public controversy over the prosecution team's decision to clear her of the charges. The decision aims to ensure careful deliberation by an entirely civilian review committee, given the high public attention and ongoing dispute surrounding the case. The Supreme Prosecutors' Office stated that while the investigation was thorough, the decision to involve the review committee was made to enhance fairness and prevent further controversy. The prosecution's conclusion to drop all charges against Kim has sparked debate among political circles, with lawmakers from the main opposition Democratic Party criticizing the prosecutors for conducting an unjust and lenient investigation. Meanwhile, a lawmaker from the ruling People Power Party argued that there is no provision in the Anti-Graft Law for penalizing the spouse of a public official for accepting a bribe. The decision to involve a review committee comes after the top prosecutor ordered a special investigation team to be set up on the case, with the team reportedly viewing the bag Kim received as a gift exchanged between individuals to express gratitude.
