Unification minister calls on N. Korea to accept S. Korea's offer for dialogue channel

In a photograph released by the Ministry of Unification on August 1, 2024, Unification Minister Kim Yung-ho is seen addressing a ceremony in Paju, situated approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Seoul, to honor North Korean defectors who lost their lives during their escape. Following President Yoon Suk Yeol's proposal of establishing a working-level dialogue platform to North Korea, Minister Kim urged North Korea to respond to South Korea's offer and restart the suspended inter-Korean communication channels. He emphasized that South Korea is ready to engage in discussions on various topics, including North Korea's denuclearization, humanitarian issues, and inter-Korean exchanges. President Yoon Suk Yeol's vision for a freedom-based unification with North Korea was disclosed during an address commemorating Liberation Day, where he pledged to increase the flow of external information into North Korea. Minister Kim echoed the president's proposal, urging North Korea to accept the establishment of a dialogue channel between the two Koreas and called for the resumption of the inter-Korean liaison communication line and military hotlines that North Korea unilaterally suspended. This unification vision serves as an update to the government's 1994 unification formula, which aims to promote reconciliation and cooperation, establish a Korean commonwealth, and achieve the unification of the country.
