Unionized workers at Samsung Electronics to launch 4-day strike

Samsung Electronics' labor union held a rally at the company's Giheung Campus in Yongin, 42 kilometers south of Seoul, on Tuesday. The union announced plans for a four-day strike starting on Liberation Day, citing demands for a pay raise and additional bonuses as the main reasons for the industrial action. The strike, scheduled for August 15-18, will involve a refusal to work on Liberation Day and a shift-based work schedule until Sunday. Despite numerous rounds of negotiations since January, the union and management have been unable to reach agreements on various issues, including wage increases, vacation systems, and bonuses. The National Samsung Electronics Union, representing 31,000 workers, or about 24 percent of Samsung Electronics' 125,000-strong workforce, has been on a full-scale strike since July 8. After a 25-day strike earlier this month, the unionized workers returned to work and announced plans for a "long-term plan," which includes conducting "blitz" walkouts. The union's specific demands include a 5.6 percent basic pay raise for all members, a guaranteed day off on the union's founding day, and compensation for economic losses due to the strike. On the other hand, Samsung Electronics has offered a 5.1 percent increase in wages and expressed its commitment to fostering a mutually beneficial relationship with the labor union.
