Yoon mulls speech after summer break

President Yoon Suk Yeol is contemplating delivering a speech to the nation later this month to address various domestic reform agendas in the areas of education, labor, medicine, population, and public pension sustainability. The presidential office revealed that Yoon plans to make these public remarks upon his return from summer vacation next week, just before the commencement of the 22nd National Assembly's first regular session on Sept. 2. Notably, his speech is expected to focus on pension reform and initiatives to combat the record-low birth rate, amidst the ruling bloc's clash with opposition parties in the National Assembly. During the previous National Assembly, there was a deadlock between the ruling bloc and the main opposition regarding pension benefit calculations based on wage levels. The main opposition has urged the government to propose a new pension reform before September to alleviate financial pressure on the younger generation in an aging society. Additionally, the Yoon administration faces the challenge of pushing through a bill to establish a dedicated ministry for population planning, as directed by the opposition-controlled parliament. Yoon's upcoming speech will mark his seventh public address since taking office, aligning with his commitment to hold quarterly press conferences. However, the specific timing and topic of his remarks have not been confirmed, and there is anticipation regarding whether Yoon will exercise his veto right over contentious bills, including a significant cash-equivalent coupon distribution and measures to limit his power in nominating public broadcaster board members.
