Yoon postpones dinner with PPP leaders amid row over medical school quota increase

President Yoon Suk Yeol's scheduled dinner with the ruling People Power Party leaders has been postponed until after the Chuseok holiday, according to his office. Originally planned for Friday, the dinner was intended to include PPP leader Han Dong-hoon, floor leader Choo Kyung-ho, five Supreme Council members, and the party's policy chief, but has now been delayed to prioritize addressing people's livelihood issues in light of the upcoming holiday. A senior presidential official emphasized the importance of demonstrating a focus on solutions for livelihood concerns rather than hosting a gathering between the party and the government at this time, and confirmed that the meal with the ruling party leadership will take place after Chuseok, which is from Sept. 16-18 this year. The postponement follows a proposal from Han to defer the medical school quota increase for 2026 in an effort to resolve an impasse over the government's medical reform plans, which was met with resistance from the presidential office. President Yoon Suk Yeol has decided to delay a dinner meeting with the ruling People Power Party leaders until after the Chuseok holiday, as confirmed by his office. Originally scheduled for Friday, the dinner was intended to include several key PPP figures, but the postponement is now aimed at prioritizing the focus on addressing people's livelihood issues ahead of the holiday. The decision comes in the midst of a dispute over the government's medical reform plans, with the presidential office standing firm on its proposal to increase medical school admissions by 2,000 seats annually for the next five years, despite a suggestion from PPP leader Han Dong-hoon to defer the quota increase for 2026. The postponement reflects the president's commitment to addressing pressing livelihood concerns and a willingness to engage with the ruling party leadership after the Chuseok holiday.
