Yoon unveils vision for 'freedom-based unification,' proposes dialogue with N. Korea

President Yoon Suk Yeol presented a vision for unification with North Korea, emphasizing the need to extend freedom and democracy to the reclusive nation. He proposed the establishment of an official dialogue channel with Pyongyang, which could address a wide range of issues from relieving tensions to economic cooperation and disaster responses. Yoon underscored the importance of defending freedom in South Korea, bringing about changes in North Korea through human rights improvements and outside information, and strengthening cooperation with the international community as key tasks for unification. Additionally, he reiterated his commitment to providing massive assistance to North Korea for economic rebuilding in exchange for denuclearization steps. Furthermore, Yoon outlined plans to expand North Koreans' access to information and announced the establishment of a North Korea Freedom and Human Rights Fund to support nongovernmental activities promoting freedom and human rights in the country. He also expressed the South's commitment to providing humanitarian aid to North Korea, despite previous rejections from the North Korean regime.
