Assembly passes bills to toughen punishment for deepfake sex crimes

The National Assembly passed 70 bipartisan bills, one of which increases penalties for individuals who knowingly possess or view deepfake pornography. The amendment to the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes stipulates a jail term of up to three years or a fine of up to 30 million won for such offenses. Lawmakers also agreed to protect individuals who unknowingly come into contact with the illegal content. Moreover, amendments to the Juvenile Protection Act and the Sexual Violence Prevention and Victims Protection Act were approved to enhance safeguards for victims of digital sex crimes. These changes include harsher penalties for using sexually exploitative material to manipulate minors and measures to support victims' recovery. Additionally, an amendment to the Equal Employment Opportunity and Work-Family Balance Assistance Act that extends parental leave from two to three years was passed. However, controversial bills previously vetoed by President Yoon Suk Yeol, including broadcasting legislation and economic relief measures, did not gain approval in the revote process. The ruling party aims to prevent the passage of these bills in the future by highlighting the lack of consensus reached between the ruling and opposition parties during their initial approval.
