Assembly rejects 6 bills vetoed by Yoon in revote

President Yoon Suk Yeol vetoed six controversial bills, leading to their automatic scrapping after failing to receive enough support for a parliamentary revote. The bills included four broadcasting measures aimed at diminishing the government's influence over public broadcasters, as well as legislation for cash handouts to the public and the "yellow envelope" pro-labor bill. Despite initially being passed by the opposition-led parliament, the bills were vetoed by Yoon last month, leading to their ultimate rejection due to a lack of required two-thirds support to override the veto. Among the bills rejected were proposals to amend key broadcasting acts, governance structures of public broadcasters, and rules regarding the Korea Communications Commission. Additionally, the assembly passed amendments to legislation related to parental leave, increasing the maximum length to three years, providing fathers with more vacation days after childbirth, and toughening punishments for sexual crimes, particularly those involving digital exploitation of minors. The revisions to various laws seek to enhance protections for children, combat digital sex crimes, and ensure the government's role in assisting victims of sexual violence.
