Cabinet demands Assembly reconsider special counsel bill to probe first lady

The Cabinet motion passed on Monday urged the National Assembly, led by the opposition, to reconsider three controversial bills, including one that calls for a special counsel investigation into various allegations against first lady Kim Keon Hee. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo presided over the meeting where the motion was approved, emphasizing the government's commitment to upholding the Constitution and making decisions based on law and principles. The Prime Minister stated that bills aiming to sow conflict and lacking a genuine pursuit of truth will be addressed with a focus on safeguarding the rule of law. Among the bills in question, the special counsel probe bill concerning the first lady encompasses new allegations beyond those in the previous version that was vetoed by President Yoon Suk Yeol earlier this year. It now includes claims of meddling in political candidate nominations and accepting luxury gifts, prompting the need for a thorough investigation. The Cabinet's call for a reevaluation also extends to legislation related to military interference in investigations and supporting local businesses through a gift certificate program. President Yoon is expected to veto these bills as well, following his past actions regarding similar proposals.
