Ex-President Moon named suspect in bribery probe

Former President Moon Jae-in has been implicated as a suspect in a bribery case by prosecutors, who allege that his former son-in-law received special treatment in securing a job with an airline in exchange for arranging a key government appointment for the politician who founded the airline. The investigation, led by the Criminal Division 3 of the Jeonju District Prosecutor's Office, was prompted by complaints filed four years ago regarding the hiring of Moon's former son-in-law at Thai Eastar Jet. The probe focuses on a potential connection between the son-in-law's employment and the appointment of a former lawmaker as head of the Korea SMEs and Startups Agency. The ruling People Power Party and a civic group have filed complaints alleging possible quid pro quo, with prosecutors estimating that the son-in-law received bribes in the form of salary and relocation expenses from the airline. The investigation has also led to the questioning of several former presidential office officials, including a former senior presidential secretary and a former chief of staff. The ruling and opposition parties have reacted differently to the prosecutors' actions, with the People Power Party emphasizing the need for equal treatment before the law and critics suggesting a political motive behind the investigation. Democratic Party lawmakers have condemned the allegations as baseless political retribution and warned of potential consequences for the current government and the prosecution.
