Govt. to issue legislative notice for new EV safety regulations

Firefighters put out a fire in an electric vehicle as part of a training exercise at a Seoul apartment complex on August 28, following a series of similar incidents. In response to public concerns about electric vehicle (EV) safety, the transport ministry announced plans to issue new government regulations. These regulations will involve amendments to the enforcement regulations of the Automobile Management Act and will be open for public notice and feedback for 40 days, starting from Tuesday until October 21. Additionally, the government will launch an EV battery certification system on a trial basis in October, ahead of its original schedule for February. Companies will also be required to disclose important information about the batteries, such as their brand and main components. These measures were introduced following a recent EV fire incident that caused significant damage to an apartment complex parking lot and over 100 vehicles. The ministry emphasized that these new measures are aimed at ensuring the public's right to information about EV safety and that it is dedicated to enhancing relevant systems and regulations to further improve the safety of EVs.
