[Herald Interview] Han River set to transform into lifestyle platform

Joo Yong-tae, the leader of Seoul Metropolitan Government's Future Hangang Project Headquarters, envisions transforming the Han River into a vibrant "lifestyle platform" for citizens, offering a range of recreational activities and promoting well-being. Previously seen as merely an observational spot, Joo aims to create a space where people can fully immerse themselves, engage in various activities, relax, and even conduct business, ultimately encouraging longer visits. By focusing on different seasonal themes, such as art and culture in the warmer months and health and well-being activities in the cooler seasons, Joo intends to enhance the river's offerings and appeal to a diverse range of visitors. The city government's ambitious plan includes increasing engagement with the Han River waters through transportation, aiming to turn the river into a bustling hub of waterborne traffic by 2030. By revitalizing the river for boat movement and creating an enjoyable destination, Seoul hopes to boost economic contributions and job creation substantially. Despite past challenges with water transport on the river, Joo is optimistic about the future, drawing inspiration from successful models like NYC Ferry and emphasizing the Han River's potential as a place for both cultural experiences and personal enjoyment, with the ultimate goal of making it a prized asset of global city Seoul.
