Hyundai Motor, GM join hands to shake up EV landscape

Hyundai Motor Group and General Motors have announced a collaboration to explore partnership opportunities in vehicle development, supply chain, and clean energy technology. The top leadership from both companies, including Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Chung Euisun and GM CEO Mary Barra, met and signed a memorandum of understanding to seek collaboration across strategic areas. The partnership aims to leverage their complementary strengths to reduce costs and bring a wider range of vehicles and technologies to customers faster. Potential collaboration projects are expected to focus on co-development and production of vehicles, internal combustion engines, and clean-energy technologies. The partnership announcement is seen as a significant move in the global auto industry, particularly in the electric vehicle (EV) race, and could have a major impact on the industry landscape. Hyundai Motor and GM, the world's third and fifth largest auto brands by sales last year, respectively, aim to enhance competitiveness in key markets and vehicle segments, drive cost efficiencies, and provide stronger customer value through combined expertise and innovative technologies. The collaboration will also explore joint sourcing opportunities in areas such as battery raw materials and steel. The partnership is expected to put other major players in the global auto sector on notice, particularly in the EV race, and could potentially challenge Tesla's position in the US EV market.
