K-pop groups face dilemmas when confronted with political issues

K-pop idols, including Nmixx from JYP Entertainment, are facing challenges when it comes to dealing with geopolitical controversies. In a recent instance, Nmixx performed part of the song "Dokdo is Our Land" in a YouTube video, triggering a heated dispute between Korean and Japanese fans. This incident has sparked a debate about whether K-pop bands should avoid addressing political issues or be open about their political positions. It's a sensitive issue as Japan claims sovereignty over Dokdo, islets in the East Sea, while Korea holds sovereignty over them. The group's performance of the song was part of a mix-pop medley and was not a deliberate statement made by the group. K-pop agencies generally believe that it's inappropriate for idols to engage in controversies outside their expertise, which is music. They train their singers to avoid making political statements due to the wide variation in perspectives on such issues across different countries. This creates a dilemma for K-pop artists, especially as they are often expected to remain silent on political issues that conflict with national interests, despite being encouraged to support other social and political movements. The situation is further complicated by the double standard held by K-pop fans in regard to social-political issues. While idols are encouraged to support certain movements, they are expected to stay silent on other issues that may go against national interests. This has led to conflicts and controversies in the past, particularly in relation to political issues between Japan, China, and Korea.
