Leaders of rival parties hold 1st meeting

The chairs of the People Power Party and the Democratic Party of Korea, Han Dong-hoon and Rep. Lee Jae-myung, had their inaugural meeting on Sunday, aiming to kickstart a new era of constructive politics. The 90-minute closed-door session began with each leader delivering a 10-minute opening statement. Han emphasized that the meeting would mark the beginning of productive and practical politics, expressing his desire to find common ground between the ruling and opposition parties. Lee echoed this sentiment, expressing hope for realistic measures in areas such as energy, semiconductors, and future technology. The meeting was initially scheduled for August 25 but was postponed due to Lee testing positive for COVID-19. The agenda included discussions on the country's low birth rate, future growth engines, inflation, cost of living, tax reform, and bills that were vetoed by President Yoon Suk Yeol. Additionally, the meeting addressed the government's plan to increase the medical school quota, a topic that has caused tension between Yoon and Han. This meeting marked the first official discussion between rival party leaders since 2013, signifying a potential shift towards bipartisan cooperation.
