Leaders of ruling, main opposition parties set to hold 1st official talks

The chairs of the ruling People Power Party and the main opposition Democratic Party, Han Dong-hoon and Lee Jae-myung, are scheduled to hold their first official meeting on Sunday. The meeting, initially planned for last Sunday, was postponed due to Lee's COVID-19 positive test. The two leaders are expected to discuss various issues, including a special counsel probe into a young Marine's death and a new investment tax policy, during their 90-minute closed-door meeting at the National Assembly in Seoul. This meeting is significant as it marks the first official talks between the leaders of the ruling and main opposition parties since 2013. The agenda for their Sunday meeting will include the aforementioned issues and will follow a format of delivering seven-minute opening remarks before engaging in discussions behind closed doors. Prior to this official meeting, the two leaders had a brief encounter on December 29, 2020, when Han took office as the party's interim leader, but no specific agenda items were discussed at that time.
