Middle East’s big AI push lures Korean tech firms

Korean tech giants are rapidly expanding into the Middle East as countries in the region look to artificial intelligence to diversify their oil-driven economies. Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. are reportedly considering establishing semiconductor manufacturing facilities in the United Arab Emirates, with discussions in the early stages. While the potential projects could cost over $100 billion, challenges such as the need for "superclean" water in the desert environment may pose obstacles. Despite the hurdles, there is optimism about the collaboration between Korean companies and Middle Eastern countries in AI development. The UAE and Saudi Arabia are investing heavily in advanced technology, with plans to boost their AI sectors significantly. Korean AI startups like Naver, Rebellions, FuriosaAI, and Wrtn Technology are forging partnerships and setting up regional headquarters in the Middle East to capitalize on the growing opportunities in the region. The stable investment climate and strong determination of Middle Eastern countries to lead the AI revolution make them attractive partners for Korean companies seeking to strengthen their presence in the AI sector.
