NK nuclear test 'possible' around US election in Nov., says Yoon aide

North Korea's potential nuclear test is deemed "possible" by President Yoon Suk Yeol's national security aide, Shin Won-sik. Shin stated that North Korea's need to enhance its nuclear weapon capability could lead to its seventh nuclear test, which may occur before or after the US presidential election in November. He emphasized that North Korea's technological advancements make a seventh nuclear test inevitable, especially as the country aims to develop smaller nuclear warheads under Kim Jong-un's leadership. Shin highlighted that the timing of the nuclear test would be based on North Korea's strategic calculations regarding the benefits versus losses of such an action. He criticized former President Moon Jae-in for allegedly allowing North Korea to exploit dialogue for nuclear weapon development. Additionally, Shin mentioned that North Korea's recent revelations of a uranium enrichment facility are part of its efforts to gain leverage in future diplomacy with the US. Despite international non-recognition of North Korea as a nuclear-weapon state, concerns persist about its nuclear ambitions, with estimates suggesting a significant increase in its nuclear warhead count by 2030. Shin also indicated the likelihood of a trilateral summit between South Korea, the US, and Japan later this year, emphasizing continued cooperation among the three nations.
