Panmunjom tours for select Korean nationals may resume in October

Tours to the inter-Korean truce village of Panmunjom are set to potentially resume for Korean nationals in October after being suspended for over a year due to an incident involving former US soldier Travis King crossing into North Korea. The National Institute for Unification Education, responsible for the tour programs, is collaborating with the United Nations Command to prepare for the tours, which include visits to the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone and the Joint Security Area where the two Koreas' forces are stationed face-to-face. The institute aims to restart the tour program by the end of October, initially focusing on select government clients before opening it up to the general public. Following Travis King's unauthorized crossing into North Korea in July 2023, all general tour programs for both Korean and foreign nationals were halted. King, who was later sentenced to confinement and discharged from the military, disrupted the tour operations that had been in place. While extraordinary tours for select foreign nationals have continued under the supervision of the UN Command, general tours for foreigners have not yet resumed. Plans to restart the tour program for South Korean nationals were announced by the Unification Ministry in November 2023, but were put on hold due to the suspension of inter-Korean military agreements.
