Posco’s volunteer program fosters spirit of sharing

Posco Group, a leading South Korean steel company, recently organized two work camps for university students in North Gyeongsang Province and South Jeolla Province between July and August. Each year, Posco recruits students from various Korean universities to participate in its volunteer group, Beyond. This year, 50 students engaged in a range of volunteer activities focused on addressing environmental and social challenges. During the work camps, students planted 400 magnolia seedlings at Baekdudaegan National Arboretum, contributing to the creation of the third Beyond Forest. Posco has been actively supporting local ecosystems by cultivating native honey plants and building bird nests for the past three years. Additionally, the volunteers organized events to promote social interaction and physical development for children with disabilities, aiming to foster an inclusive society where individuals with and without disabilities can coexist harmoniously. In August, the participants prepared meals for underprivileged seniors in Gwangyang, South Jeolla Province, and engaged in various activities such as creating Braille menu boards and crafting upcycled items like effective microorganism soil balls. Posco's Gwangyang Steelworks has facilitated the volunteers' involvement in 14 "talent donation programs," offering opportunities for diverse experiences like working at a food truck, painting murals, and receiving guidance from former Beyond volunteers. Despite the start of the semester, students have continued their support for local events such as green marathons and multicultural festivals, demonstrating their commitment to addressing environmental and social issues. Posco plans to resume its global volunteer activities in Cilegon, Indonesia, in January, focusing on climate action initiatives through construction, education, and cultural projects.
