Prosecutors set to request sentencing for opposition leader over alleged perjury subornation

Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung is facing sentencing for allegedly pressuring a former mayoral secretary to provide false testimony in his favor back in 2018. The case involves accusations of Lee coercing the secretary of a former Seongnam Mayor to give misleading testimony in a 2018 election law violation case. The Seoul Central District Court is set to conclude the perjury subornation case, with prosecutors presenting their sentencing request and Lee and his defense team delivering their final statements. A verdict is expected to be reached by late October at the earliest. This legal battle is just one of four trials that Lee is currently entangled in, which include charges of bribery and election falsehood related to a notable property development corruption scandal. Prosecutors are pushing for a two-year prison term in another election falsehood case, a ruling that could lead to Lee losing his parliamentary seat and being disqualified from running for public office for the next five years if finalized. The outcome of this ongoing legal saga will have significant implications for Lee's political future.
