S. Korea reviews emergency evacuation plan in Middle East

South Korea is currently reassessing its emergency evacuation plan in response to the escalating conflict in the Middle East, particularly following an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon targeting the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. The government is focusing on ensuring the safety of South Korean citizens in the region, with discussions held during an emergency meeting led by President Yoon Suk Yeol's aides, National Security Adviser Shin Won-sik, and Director of National Policy Sung Tae-yoon. The plan may involve evacuating not only from Lebanon but also from Israel and Iran if the situation worsens significantly. The estimated number of South Korean nationals in Lebanon, Israel, and Iran is around 140, 480, and 100, respectively. First Vice Minister Kim Hong-kyun emphasized the need for Korean nationals to leave the Middle East immediately, anticipating a potential escalation of the conflict in the region. The government has been closely monitoring the situation in the Middle East and has previously advised Korean citizens to consider departing the area in light of the increasing tensions. Efforts are being made to prepare for any potential disruptions to flights from the Middle East countries as the situation continues to unfold.
