S. Korea, Slovakia agree to forge 'strategic partnership'

The leaders of South Korea and Slovakia have agreed to enhance their relationship by establishing a strategic partnership during a summit in Seoul, where the Slovak Prime Minister visited. President Yoon Suk Yeol described Slovakia as a crucial European partner with shared values, emphasizing the potential for increased cooperation in trade, investment, energy security, and defense industry. Both leaders expressed optimism that this elevated partnership would set a new milestone in their bilateral history and serve as a foundation for future ties, particularly over the next three decades. Prime Minister Fico highlighted nuclear energy, trade, and investment as key focus areas during his visit, expressing gratitude for South Korea's support following an assassination attempt. The summit marked a significant moment as South Korea became the first Asian country to establish a strategic partnership with Slovakia, aligning with similar agreements the country has with other European nations. The signing of memorandums of understanding between industry ministers from both countries emphasized a commitment to promoting carbon-free energy solutions such as nuclear energy, renewables, and hydrogen to combat climate change. The joint statement also reiterated support for peace on the Korean Peninsula, advocating for North Korea's denuclearization and addressing concerns over its military cooperation with Russia. Overall, the growing trade volume and investment between South Korea and Slovakia underscore the strengthening ties and shared goals between the two nations since establishing diplomatic relations in 1993.
