S. Korean science ministry opens joint AI research lab with NYU

The Ministry of Science and ICT in South Korea announced on Tuesday the establishment of a joint artificial intelligence research lab in partnership with New York University. The goal of the Global AI Frontier Lab at NYU is to serve as a leading global hub for collaborative AI research, bringing together scholars not only from South Korea and the United States but also from various other nations. The lab will be jointly overseen by two prominent computer scientists, Cho Kyung-hyun and Yann LeCun, who hold positions as professors at NYU. Cho is associated with the South Korean AI startup Upstage, while LeCun serves as the chief AI scientist at Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. The Ministry of Science and ICT has allocated 45 billion won ($33.8 million) for the lab's funding over the next five years, with an additional $31.5 million pledged by NYU. Experts from Seoul and Washington will collaborate on fundamental AI research at the lab, with a focus on areas such as trustworthy and ethical AI, as well as AI solutions for medical and healthcare purposes. At the lab's inauguration ceremony in New York, Science Minister Yoo Sang-im highlighted the significance of the strengthened AI collaboration between South Korea and the US, emphasizing the need for further growth in bilateral scientific and technological partnerships.
