South Korean portal selling sanctioned North Korean artwork: lawmaker

A South Korean portal site, Naver, has been found selling artwork from a North Korean studio sanctioned by the United Nations, as reported by People Power Party Rep. Park Choong-kwon. The studio in question is Mansudae, a state-sponsored art studio based in Pyongyang and established in the 1970s by former North Korean leader Kim Il-sung. The UN imposed sanctions on Mansudae in 2017 due to its involvement in financing North Korea's nuclear programs, and South Korean authorities also designated it as a restricted party in 2016. Rep. Park expressed concerns about the sale of these artworks on Naver, highlighting potential violations of laws aimed at combating terrorist financing. He emphasized the need to investigate how the artwork ended up for sale on the platform to ensure compliance with existing regulations, suggesting that the situation might indicate a lack of diligence in enforcing UN sanctions against North Korea.
