Yoon declines to respond to query on alleged remarks over Marine's death

Col. Park Jung-hun, along with his supporters, held a press conference in Yongsan-gu where he accused Maj. Gen. Im Sung-keun and seven other military officials of being accountable for the death of Marine Cpl. Chae Su-geun. The presidential office chose not to respond to a court-approved inquiry regarding whether President Yoon Suk Yeol had made comments last year that were seen as obstructing an investigation into the Marine's death. The court martial in central Seoul granted Col. Park's request to investigate Yoon's alleged remarks opposing the charging of Maj. Gen. Im Sung-keun in connection with Cpl. Chae's death, which occurred during a search and rescue operation in July 2023. Col. Park, who headed the Marine Corps' investigation into Cpl. Chae's death, made this request during a court session related to his alleged insubordination during the initial inquiry. Despite facing trial for allegedly sharing the investigation findings with civilian authorities against orders from the Defense Minister and Marine Corps chief, Park has maintained that the decision to retrieve the report accusing military commanders of responsibility for Chae's death was influenced by President Yoon's displeasure with the inquiry results. Presidential Chief of Staff Chung Jin-suk opted not to respond to the court-approved query, citing national security concerns.
