Yoon not to attend opening ceremony of National Assembly session: presidential office

President Yoon Suk Yeol has decided not to participate in the opening ceremony of the regular session of the National Assembly, as confirmed by a presidential official. This decision comes in response to the opposition party's actions to push through crucial bills without bipartisan agreement. Traditionally, the president would attend the opening ceremony and deliver a speech, but the current situation has led to a change in plans. The presidential official expressed the view that it is necessary to restore normalcy in the National Assembly, which has been utilizing special counsel and impeachment procedures inappropriately, before extending an invitation to the president. There are concerns that inviting the president under these circumstances could lead to a public protest and humiliation. The ruling People Power Party had previously boycotted the opening ceremony, and they had also requested that President Yoon not attend. This development marks the first time since 1987 that a president would be absent from the opening ceremony if President Yoon chooses not to attend.
