Yoon taps ex-police deputy commissioner for security role

President Yoon Suk Yeol has appointed former Deputy Police Commissioner Park Jong-joon as the new head of the Presidential Security Service, responsible for safeguarding the South Korean leader. Effective immediately, the 59-year-old Park takes over from Kim Yong-hyun, who was recently appointed as the minister of national defense. Park emphasized the importance of the head of state's safety as a national security concern, drawing on his experience as deputy commissioner general of the Korean National Police Agency and deputy head of the Presidential Security Service during previous administrations. Park, who hails from a town now part of Sejong City, excelled academically at the Korean National Police University and later obtained a master's degree in public administration from Syracuse University in New York. His extensive background in law enforcement and previous experience in presidential security make him well-equipped for his new role overseeing the protection of the South Korean president.
