Yoon touts S. Korea as cybersecurity drill hub

President Yoon Suk Yeol highlighted South Korea's position as a global center for cybersecurity exercises during his attendance at the inaugural Cyber Summit Korea 2024 in Seoul. He emphasized the country's extensive experience in defending against cyber attacks, particularly from hostile actors like North Korea, which has enabled South Korea to enhance its cybersecurity capabilities. Yoon also expressed concerns about the growing sophistication of cyber threats orchestrated by totalitarian states and emphasized the potential impact on key infrastructure and citizen safety. Yoon further underscored the importance of international cooperation in addressing cyber threats, particularly through initiatives like the Allied Power Exercise, which was conducted alongside the summit. He also mentioned South Korea's shift in cyber strategy to incorporate offensive capabilities in response to the international community's call for collaboration in cybersecurity. The event also saw the launch of a private-sector cooperative body called Cyber Partners, aiming to facilitate information sharing about cyber threats between government institutions and corporations. The summit, which included a variety of sessions, discussions, and exhibitions, aimed to elevate South Korea's presence as a hub for international cyber drills in the Indo-Pacific region. Additionally, the event featured the participation of 20 government institutions and 102 corporations in forming Cyber Partners, demonstrating a concerted effort to anticipate and respond to evolving cyber threats through close collaboration between the public and private sectors.
