Yoon's approval rating rebounds from record low after trip to Czech Republic

President Yoon Suk Yeol's visit to the Czech Republic led to a resurgence in his approval rating, reaching 23% in a recent Gallup Korea poll. This marked a 3-percentage point increase from the previous poll, which had recorded his lowest rating since taking office in May 2022. The boost was attributed to Yoon's diplomatic efforts, his advocacy for expanding medical school admissions in South Korea, and the progress made towards finalizing a significant nuclear export contract worth $18 billion. Gallup Korea noted that Yoon's approval rating had been stagnant in the low-to-mid 20 percent range following his party's defeat in the April general election. The recent increase was particularly noticeable among individuals in their 70s, possibly influenced by Yoon's successful visit to the Czech Republic and the ongoing negotiations regarding the nuclear export deal. Meanwhile, the proportion of those who disapproved of Yoon decreased by 2 percentage points to 68% in the same poll, reflecting a shift in public sentiment following the challenging period of medical staff shortages and doctor strikes.
