AliExpress Korea chief questioned on product safety at Assembly audit

During a parliamentary audit, AliExpress Korea CEO Ray Zhang reiterated the company's dedication to improving product safety, despite facing criticism from South Korean lawmakers for failing to prevent the sale of hazardous products. The Trade, Industry, Energy, SMEs and Startups Committee conducted the audit to address concerns about unsafe products on Chinese e-commerce platforms like AliExpress Korea, Temu, and Shein, which have gained popularity in Korea but have also been associated with product safety issues. Lawmakers, including Rep. Oh Se-hee, highlighted instances of products violating safety standards, with Zhang acknowledging the findings and pledging to enhance safety measures in collaboration with regulatory bodies and industry associations. In response to calls for concrete solutions to prevent future incidents, Zhang outlined AliExpress's plans to utilize artificial intelligence for stricter monitoring of product listings, improve seller management, and impose harsher penalties on noncompliant sellers. The session also featured Trade Minister Ahn Deok-geun, who acknowledged the challenges in regulating foreign e-commerce platforms due to legal complexities and extraterritorial nature. Additionally, concerns raised by Rep. Lee Eon-joo regarding privacy violations involving IP cameras purchased through AliExpress were addressed by Zhang, who assured that the platform prohibits the sale of spy cameras and is committed to preventing such breaches. This audit marked AliExpress Korea's second appearance before the parliamentary committee, following previous inquiries about counterfeit goods.
