Ruling party leader Han Dong-hoon has intensified his calls for first lady Kim Keon Hee to cease public activities and address various allegations against her, including claims of her illegal involvement in the April 10 parliamentary elections.
Han's comments followed the conservative bloc's recent victory in two out of five seats during regional by-elections in its strongholds, which occurred amid President Yoon Suk Yeol's unprecedentedly low approval ratings. This victory appears to solidify Han's leadership within the ruling party, even as some observers note a rift between him and President Yoon.
During a party Supreme Council meeting, Han underscored the necessity for reform within the conservative bloc to restore public trust, stating, "the first lady must halt (all of) her public activities as she promised during the presidential election." Kim had previously indicated her intention to focus on her role as a supportive spouse, a commitment made during a press conference in December 2021 amidst accusations of plagiarism regarding her Ph.D. dissertation and embellishment of her resume.
Recent allegations against Kim include her purported involvement in a stock manipulation scheme tied to Deutsch Motors, a BMW dealer in Korea, as well as claims of receiving a luxury handbag and interfering in the nomination process for ruling party candidates in the April elections.
Han urged Kim to provide a candid explanation of the allegations and cooperate with any investigation procedures focused on these concerns. He also reiterated the necessity for a personnel reshuffle at the presidential office to dispel notions that Kim had inappropriately influenced state affairs through connections with officials there.
"A personnel overhaul related to first lady Kim is absolutely, urgently needed at the presidential office," he stated, emphasizing that such changes aim to improve governance and win back public support rather than to counter allegations of misconduct.
Han expressed that the outcomes of the recent by-elections indicate a public demand for reform and change, linking the conservative party's declining support to the controversies surrounding the first lady. He asserted that these issues have overshadowed the government's broader reform agenda.
In a related development, the main opposition party has proposed a bill for a special counsel investigation into the allegations against Kim, marking the third attempt to introduce such legislation. Previous attempts were unsuccessful due to a lack of votes to override presidential vetoes.
This new bill aims to address not only the existing allegations but also new claims suggesting Kim sought assistance from a political broker to sway opinion polls in her husband's favor during the 2022 presidential campaign.
President Yoon and Han are scheduled to meet one-on-one early next week, with the allegations against Kim Keon Hee, including her alleged stock manipulation involvement and interference in candidate nominations, likely to dominate their discussions.

또한 그는 대통령실이 김 여사와 관련된 인사 개편을 진행해야 한다고 주장하며, 김 여사가 여러 대통령실 관계자들과의 연결고리를 통해 불법적으로 국가 업무에 개입했음을 부인해야 한다고 덧붙였다.
"김 여사와 관련된 인사 개편은 대통령실에서 반드시, 그리고 시급하게 필요하다. 이러한 개편은 잘 돌아가는 정치, 국민의 마음을 얻는 정치를 위한 것이지 잘못된 일을 반박하기 위한 것이 아니다"고 설명했다.
한 대표는 최근 재보궐선거 결과가 국민이 정부와 여당에게 '개혁과 변화'를 요구하고 있다는 신호라고 언급하며, 김 여사와 관련된 문제로 인해 보수당의 지지가 줄어들고 있다고 우려를 표했다.
그는 "김 여사와 관련된 문제가 반복적으로 모든 정치 이슈를 가리고 있기 때문에, 정부의 개혁 계획이 국민의 지지를 얻지 못하고 있다"고 주장했다.
한편, 제1야당 민주당은 목요일에 김 여사에 대한 의혹을 조사하는 특별검사법안을 제정했다. 이는 이번이 세 번째 공식 법안 발의다.
이전 두 개의 법안은 의원들이 윤 대통령의 거부권을 무력화할 만큼 충분한 투표를 확보하지 못해 폐기되었다.
새 법안이 조사하고자 하는 기존의 의혹 외에도, 김 여사가 2022 대선 전에 정치 여론 조사 결과를 남편에게 유리하게 조작하기 위해 자칭 정치 중개인인 명태균의 도움을 요청했다는 새로운 주장을 추가했다.
윤 대통령과 한 대표는 다음 주 초에 1대1 회의를 가질 예정이며, 김 여사에 대한 여러 의혹, 주식 조작 계획에의 연루, 4월 10일 총선 후보 지명 간섭, 고급 핸드백 수수 등이 주요 안건으로 다뤄질 것으로 보인다.
