Cabinet passes new bill to criminalize even possession of deepfake porn

During a Cabinet meeting at the Seoul Government Complex on Thursday, a new bill was approved that aims to impose stricter penalties for digital sex crimes involving deepfake technology. The proposed changes to the sexual crimes punishment law include penalties of up to three years in prison or fines reaching 30 million won (approximately $22,500) for individuals caught possessing, purchasing, storing, or viewing deepfake sexual content. The bill also increases the punishment for producing and distributing deepfake pornographic materials from five to seven years in prison. If such crimes are committed for profit, the penalties will be further intensified. Additionally, individuals using deepfake sexual exploitation materials for blackmail could face over a year in prison. This bill will take effect following approval from President Yoon Suk Yeol. The Cabinet also passed two other bills focused on the government's obligations to remove illegally filmed content, support victims in their recovery, and enhance protections for children against sexual offenses.
