Copyright group seeks cooperative solutions for music at gyms

Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA), the largest music copyright management organization in South Korea, is shifting its focus towards raising awareness about copyright regulations rather than resorting to legal actions against gym owners who are not complying with the music copyright rules. KOMCA's Chair, Chu Ga-yeoul, emphasized the importance of fostering a cooperative environment between copyright holders and users by enhancing communication and understanding. The association aims to work closely with gym owners to establish a fair system for the collection and distribution of copyright fees, rather than pursuing legal measures. Currently, only about half of the registered gyms in South Korea have paid the required copyright fees to KOMCA, indicating a lack of awareness among gym owners about their obligations. This has led to unauthorized use of copyrighted music, resulting in legal disputes and complaints related to copyright infringement. KOMCA is now looking to implement measures to address these issues and is in discussions with the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism to explore reform initiatives that can benefit both creators and the fitness industry. The association plans to prioritize proactive promotional activities to improve copyright awareness and aims to find sustainable solutions that support the livelihoods of creators while fostering a harmonious relationship between copyright holders and users.
