This year's National Assembly audit has faced significant criticism, being labeled the worst to date, with civic groups condemning both political parties for their inadequate performance.
A coalition of 270 local civic groups graded this year's audit with a near-failing score of D-minus. The National Assembly Audit NGO Monitoring Group, which has evaluated every annual Assembly audit since its inception in 1999, stated that the current audit, which began on October 7 and is scheduled to conclude on Friday, represents the poorest evaluation and assessment process conducted by the parliament.
The monitoring group noted, "Excluding instances where audits were not properly conducted due to boycotts by ruling parties, this year's audit was the worst. All parliamentary standing committees attempted to carry out investigations rather than audits," as detailed in its annual report.
Both the ruling People Power Party and the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea were criticized for failing to fulfill the audit's purpose of inspecting and assessing government institutions. The report highlighted that the Democratic Party focused on protecting its leader, Lee Jae-myung, from legal issues, while the People Power Party neglected to propose clear policies and monitor the welfare of citizens.
Critics have expressed disappointment with the first annual parliamentary audit conducted by the 22nd National Assembly, claiming it generated much discussion without addressing critical issues.
On October 15, Hanni, a member of the musical group NewJeans, testified as a reference witness during an audit by the Environment and Labor Committee regarding allegations of workplace bullying and ostracism. She reported being ostracized within her management company amid a conflict involving former CEO Min Hee-jin and parent company Hybe, garnering notable media attention.
Her testimony drew additional scrutiny when Democratic Party Representative Choi Min-hee was seen photographing Hanni during the audit and reportedly met her privately afterward, which led to criticism from People Power Party Representative Park Jeong-hun. He questioned the appropriateness of a lawmaker meeting with a NewJeans member during a state audit.
Over the course of 20 days, 17 parliamentary standing committees have audited 802 government institutions, including the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee, and the Public Administration and Security Committee.
