The main opposition Democratic Party plans to advance a bill for a special counsel investigation into allegations involving first lady Kim Keon Hee during a parliamentary plenary session next month, an official announced on Thursday.
The Democratic Party has previously supported two similar bills, which were ultimately discarded in revotes following vetoes by President Yoon Suk Yeol.
According to a party official, the new bill is expected to be reviewed by the legislation and judiciary parliamentary committee early next month and is scheduled for a vote at the plenary session on November 14.
This latest bill broadens the scope of the proposed special counsel investigation to include recent allegations that the first lady solicited assistance from Myung Tae-kyun, a self-identified political broker, to conduct public opinion surveys that favored her husband in the lead-up to the 2022 presidential election.
Additional items for investigation include claims that the first lady interfered in candidate nominations for the general elections in April and the local elections and by-elections in 2022.
The scope of the investigation has also been expanded to address suspicions regarding the first lady and her aides leaking state secrets from the presidential office and assigning civilians without formal positions to perform state duties.
Similar to the previously scrapped bills, the new proposal also seeks to investigate the first lady's alleged involvement in a stock manipulation scheme and her acceptance of a luxury handbag.

주요 야당인 더불어민주당은 다음 달 국회의 본회의에서 김건희 여사와 관련된 의혹에 대해 특별검사 수사를 요청하는 법안의 통과를 추진할 계획이라고 공식적으로 밝혔다.
더불어민주당은 과거에 두 차례 유사한 법안에 찬성 투표를 했으나, 윤석열 대통령의 거부권 행사로 인해 해당 법안들이 폐기된 바 있다.
당 관계자는 다음 달 초에 법제사법위원회에서 새로운 법안이 검토될 가능성이 높으며, 11월 14일로 예정된 본회의에서 표결이 이루어질 것이라고 전했다.
이번 법안은 김 여사가 2022년 대선 이전에 남편의 여론조사를 위해 자칭 정치 브로커인 명태균의 도움을 요청했다는 최근 의혹을 포함하여 특별검사 수사의 범위를 확대하고 있다.
제안된 수사의 추가 항목으로는 김 여사가 지난 4월 총선과 2022년 지방선거 및 재보궐선거 후보 지명에 개입했다는 의혹도 포함되어 있다.
또한, 김 여사와 그 측근들이 대통령실의 국가 기밀 유출에 연루되었으며 공식적인 직위가 없는 민간인을 국가 업무 수행에 배치했다는 정황도 포함된다.
폐기된 법안들과 마찬가지로 새로운 법안 역시 김 여사가 주식 조작 계획에 연루되었는지와 고급 가방을 수수한 의혹에 대한 조사를 요구하고 있다.
