The chief of the ruling People Power Party, Han Dong-hoon, has intensified his call for an independent investigation into first lady Kim Keon Hee during a party meeting on Wednesday, emphasizing that such a probe is essential for restoring public trust in the ruling bloc.
Han's proposal faced immediate opposition from within his own party. He stated, "We have promised the people that we will start working to recommend candidates for a special inspector general," and mentioned that he informed President Yoon Suk Yeol about initiating the legislative process for candidate recommendations.
According to South Korea's Independent Inspector General Act, the National Assembly is tasked with recommending three candidates for the inspector position. This inspector operates under the President's jurisdiction but has the authority to investigate the President's spouse and relatives, as well as senior public officials. The recommendation process typically involves both the ruling party and the main opposition party.
Han expressed urgency in addressing issues related to Yoon's wife, indicating that significant actions must be taken before a district court ruling on November 15 regarding opposition leader Rep. Lee Jae-myung's alleged election law violations and attempts to influence testimony.
"By then, we should cater to people's demand for justice concerning issues related to Kim," Han stated, warning that ongoing public dissatisfaction with the first lady could undermine trust in the ruling party.
In response to Han's remarks, the ruling party's floor leader, Rep. Choo Kyung-ho, noted that gathering party opinions on the matter would "take a considerable amount of time."
This development follows a record low in President Yoon's approval ratings, as reported by a pollster, after his wife was cleared of multiple allegations. The prosecution's decision to cease legal proceedings regarding her alleged acceptance of luxury gifts and involvement in stock manipulation has drawn criticism from opposition parties, who accuse the government of selective justice.
On the same day, Han suggested that Kim should remain out of the public eye, that negative issues surrounding her should be addressed, and that a staff reshuffle in the presidential office should occur amid allegations of her influence in state affairs. He also advocated for an independent investigation by an inspector general, which Yoon indicated would require bipartisan agreement.
In a counter to Yoon's previous claims regarding the necessity of parliamentary cooperation for the nomination process, Han argued that such assertions are unlikely to resonate with the public.

한 대표는 윤 대통령의 배우자와 관련된 문제를 해결할 시간이 없다고 주장하며, 야당의 이재명 대표에 대한 선거법 위반과 허위 증언 방조 혐의에 대한 지방법원의 판결이 예정된 11월 이전에 중요한 조치를 취해야 한다고 강조했다.
그는 "이재명 대표의 범죄에 대한 판결이 11월 15일에 나올 예정"이라며, "그때까지 김 여사와 관련된 정의에 대한 국민의 요구를 충족시켜야 한다"고 말했다.
이어 "그때도 여전히 국민이 김 여사에 대해 불만을 터뜨린다면, 우리는 민주당에 실망한 국민의 신뢰를 얻지 못할 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
한 대표의 발언 직후, 국민의힘 원내대표인 주호영은 기자에게 당의 의견을 모으는 데 상당한 시간이 걸릴 것이라고 전했다.
이와 관련해, 여론조사 기관 리얼미터에 따르면 윤 대통령의 지지율은 비아냥이 일었던 월요일 역사적인 최저치를 기록했으며, 이는 윤 여사가 여러 혐의에서 무죄판결을 받은 후에 발생했다.
검찰의 연이어 법적 절차 중단 결정은 김 여사가 사치품 선물을 받은 의혹과 2010년대 초 주식 조작에 연루되었다는 주장에 대해 야당의 비판을 촉발했다.
같은 날, 한 대표는 윤 대통령에게 김 여사를 은둔시키고, 윤 여사와 관련된 부정적인 문제를 해결하며, 대통령실 인사 개혁을 추진할 것을 제안했다.
또한, 독립적인 감찰관 조사를 위한 제안도 있었으며, 이에 대해 윤 대통령은 양당 합의가 전제 조건이 되어야 한다고 답변했다.
이에 대해 한 대표는 "인권 재단의 이사 추천에서 국회의 협력이 없이는 독립 감찰관 추천이 불가능하다"는 윤 대통령의 주장에 반박하며, "그런 주장은 국민이 공감할 만한 것이 아니다"라고 말했다.
