Hyundai Motor and Google's autonomous driving technology subsidiary Waymo have announced a strategic partnership aimed at incorporating Waymo's sixth-generation fully autonomous technology into Hyundai's Ioniq 5 electric sports utility vehicle. The Ioniq 5 vehicles, equipped with Waymo's self-driving technology, will be produced at Hyundai's EV mass production plant in Georgia and are set to join the Waymo fleet. Hyundai plans to allocate a significant number of these vehicles for Waymo's expanding fleet, with initial testing expected to commence by late 2025. Jose Munoz, global chief operating officer of Hyundai Motor Company, expressed excitement about the collaboration with Waymo, highlighting their shared vision to enhance safety, efficiency, and convenience in transportation. The partnership aligns with Hyundai's recent launch of an autonomous vehicle foundry business, designed to provide vehicles capable of implementing high-level autonomous driving technology such as Society of Automotive Engineers Level 4. Waymo's co-CEO, Tekedra Mawakana, commended Hyundai's focus on sustainability and strong electric vehicle roadmap, emphasizing their suitability as a partner in expanding Waymo's fully autonomous service to a wider range of riders and locations.
