Hyundai Rotem Co., a defense solutions company, is working on the development of the world's first hydrogen fuel-based military tank, according to industry sources.
In partnership with the Agency for Defense Development and various defense technology research institutes, Hyundai Rotem is designing a next-generation tank model as part of its initiative to upgrade the K2 main battle tank.
The new tank, slated for production after 2040, will utilize hydrogen fuel cells in place of the existing diesel engine in the K2 tank.
This project represents a pioneering effort in the creation of a hydrogen-powered tank. The tank's hydrogen fuel cells will provide sufficient horsepower for navigating steep terrains and rough landscapes.
Additionally, the design will incorporate stealth capabilities, autonomous driving technology, and drone operation, alongside a 130-millimeter smoothbore gun.
According to an official at Hyundai Rotem, "The next-generation tank will have stronger preemptive strike capabilities using an artificial intelligence-based fire control system."
Initially, the company intends to develop a hybrid model that combines diesel and electric power before advancing to a fully hydrogen fuel-based tank.

회사는 완전한 수소 연료 기반 탱크를 개발하기 전에 디젤과 전기를 사용하는 하이브리드 모델을 먼저 개발할 계획이다.
