ICT exports rise for 11th straight month in Sept. on record chip sales

South Korea experienced a significant rise in exports of information and communication technology (ICT) products in September, marking the 11th consecutive month of growth, primarily fueled by record semiconductor sales. The Ministry of Science and ICT reported that outbound shipments reached $22.4 billion, a 24 percent increase from $18.04 billion in the same month last year. This figure is the second highest since March 2022, with imports also rising by 15.9 percent to $12.5 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of $9.88 billion in the ICT sector. Notably, chip exports surged by 36.3 percent year-on-year to an unprecedented $13.6 billion, driven by strong global demand for artificial intelligence servers. Memory chips saw a remarkable increase of 60.7 percent, reaching $8.7 billion, while mobile phone exports grew by 25.1 percent to $1.71 billion, thanks to new smartphone releases. However, exports of displays and communications equipment fell by 5.1 percent and 28.7 percent, respectively. Exports to major markets such as China, the U.S., and Vietnam also showed robust growth, with shipments to China and Hong Kong rising 22.6 percent to $9.18 billion, and exports to the U.S. increasing by 39.9 percent to $3.04 billion.
