According to the vice chairs of the National Assembly intelligence committee, the South Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS) estimates that up to 10,000 members of North Korean forces could be deployed in Russia's war on Ukraine by December. This information was shared during a briefing on Wednesday by NIS director Cho Tae-yong.
Rep. Park Sun-won reported that approximately 3,000 North Korean soldiers have already been sent to Russia, with an additional 1,500 expected to be dispatched soon. By December, the total number of deployed soldiers is projected to reach 10,000.
The NIS indicated that the North Korean soldiers currently in Russia are primarily from Pyongyang's special forces. Although these soldiers have arrived, the NIS does not believe they are actively engaged in combat yet. Notably, Kim Jong-sik, a prominent North Korean missile development engineer, was reportedly seen near the Ukrainian frontline in early August.
According to the lawmaker, North Korean authorities are taking measures to discreetly send forces to Russia, including separating families of soldiers who have left for the conflict to minimize the spread of information. Families have reportedly been relocated over the past two weeks to prevent unrest among the population.
Additionally, the Russian military is reportedly recruiting a significant number of Korean interpreters. North Korean troops undergoing training in Russia are said to lack knowledge of modern warfare tactics, such as drone strikes, leading the NIS to anticipate high casualty rates once they are deployed in combat.
In exchange for providing troops, North Korea is expected to receive substantial economic support from Russia. The NIS indicated that Russia has compensated North Korea for the number of troops sent, although the specific amount has not been disclosed.
