Prime Minister Han Duck-soo announced on Wednesday that the government will work with the National Assembly to expedite the enactment of a law supporting the artificial intelligence industry.
During a conference in Seoul, Han emphasized the significance of the proposed AI Act, which seeks to create a legal framework that promotes the AI sector while ensuring the safe use of the technology.
"(The government) will closely communicate with the National Assembly to promptly pass the AI Act," Han stated. He added that the government is committed to investing in research, building infrastructure, and developing professionals in the field.
The proposed Act on Industry and Framework for Establishing Trustworthy AI, initially introduced in 2021, has faced delays due to political disagreements. If enacted, it would unify seven AI-related bills that have been proposed since 2022.
In a related initiative, South Korea launched a presidential committee last month aimed at formulating an AI strategy and coordinating research and development efforts, with the goal of becoming one of the top three AI leaders globally by 2027.

"(정부는) AI 법안을 신속히 통과시키기 위해 국회와 긴밀히 소통할 것"이라고 한 총리는 서울에서 열린 컨퍼런스에서 말했다. "정부는 연구와 투자 지원, 인프라 구축, 전문가 양성을 위해 아끼지 않을 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
2021년에 처음 제안된 '신뢰할 수 있는 AI 구축을 위한 산업 및 틀에 관한 법안'은 정치적 당파 간의 이견으로 오랫동안 지연되고 있다. 법안이 제정되면 2022년 이후 제안된 7개의 AI 관련 법안이 통합될 예정이다.
지난달 한국은 2027년까지 글로벌 AI 주요 3국 중 하나로 자리 잡기 위해 AI 전략을 수립하고 연구개발 노력을 조정하기 위한 대통령 위원회를 출범시켰다.
