During a supreme council meeting on Thursday, the party leader emphasized the need to initiate the appointment process for an independent inspector general tasked with investigating allegations against the president's spouse, close relatives, and senior aides.
He asserted his right as party leader to initiate this process, opposing the floor leader's view that the issue should be resolved internally among party lawmakers.
The proposal for a special inspector comes amid public concerns regarding first lady Kim Keon Hee, who is accused of involvement in a stock manipulation scheme, receiving luxury items illegally, and interfering in candidate nominations for the upcoming general elections.
In response, the main opposition party has reintroduced a bill calling for a special counsel investigation into the allegations against Kim.
The independent inspector general position was created in 2014 but has remained vacant since 2016. Legally, the National Assembly is required to recommend three candidates with a minimum of 15 years of legal experience, from which the president must select one.
Lawmakers aligned with the president countered the party leader's stance, arguing that any recommendations should be made with consensus among party members rather than unilaterally by the leader.
This call for action comes as the party leader has been at odds with the president regarding the handling of the first lady's allegations. The president recently stated he would appoint a special inspector if both ruling and opposition parties could agree on candidates.
The current administration has kept the special inspector position vacant, linking its appointment to the opposition party's involvement in selecting the board for the North Korean Human Rights Foundation.
"It would be hard to gain the public's understanding (for such a stance) under the current circumstances," the party leader reiterated, emphasizing the need for a special inspector's appointment.

법에 따라 국회는 최소 15년의 법률 경험을 가진 후보 3명을 추천해야 하며, 대통령은 그중 한 명을 선택해야 한다.
윤석열 정부 측 의원들은 한 대표에 반박하며, 추천은 당 의원 간의 합의가 필요하며 일방적으로 추진되어서는 안 된다고 주장하고 있다.
한 대표의 발언은 그가 여사와 관련된 혐의 처리 문제에 대해 윤 대통령과 의견이 엇갈리고 있을 때 나온 것이다. 이번 주 초 윤 대통령은 여당과 야당이 후보 추천에 합의할 경우 특별 검사를 임명하겠다고 밝혔다.
윤 정부는 특별 검사 자리를 공석으로 두고, 임명을 북한인권재단 이사회의 구성에 민주당의 참여를 조건으로 하고 있다.
한 대표는 "현재 상황에서 그런 입장을 공감받기 어려울 것"이라며 특별 검사 임명을 재차 촉구했다.
