During a supreme council meeting on Thursday, Han reiterated the need to initiate the process of appointing an independent inspector general. This position would focus on investigating corruption allegations against the president's spouse, close relatives, and senior aides.
Han asserted his entitlement as party leader to start the appointment process, opposing Choo's view that the matter should be deliberated within the party, taking into account the opinions of all lawmakers.
In response to public concerns regarding first lady Kim Keon Hee, who is facing accusations related to stock manipulation, illegal receipt of luxury items, and interference in candidate nominations for upcoming elections, Han proposed the appointment of a special inspector.
Last week, the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) reintroduced a bill calling for a special counsel investigation into the allegations against Kim.
The independent inspector general position was created in 2014 but has remained vacant since 2016. Legally, the National Assembly is required to recommend three candidates with at least 15 years of legal experience, from which the president must select one.
Pro-Yoon lawmakers have countered Han's proposal, stating that the recommendation process requires consensus among party members and should not be initiated unilaterally by the leader.
Han's call for appointment arises amid his disagreements with President Yoon regarding how to address the allegations against the first lady. Earlier in the week, Yoon indicated he would appoint a special inspector if both the ruling and opposition parties could agree on candidate recommendations.
The Yoon administration has kept the special inspector position vacant, linking its appointment to the DP's involvement in nominating the board for the North Korean Human Rights Foundation.
Han concluded by emphasizing the difficulty in gaining public understanding for such a position under the current circumstances, reiterating his call for the appointment of a special inspector.
