The ruling People Power Party (PPP) expressed strong objections on Friday to a new bill introduced by the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) that calls for a special counsel investigation into allegations involving first lady Kim Keon Hee. The PPP labeled the proposal as an "unconstitutional wicked bill."
This bill marks the third attempt by the DP to initiate such an investigation, following two previous proposals that were withdrawn after President Yoon Suk Yeol exercised his veto power.
The newly introduced bill broadens the scope of the investigation to include allegations that Kim solicited assistance from Myung Tae-kyun, a self-proclaimed political broker, to conduct favorable public opinion surveys ahead of the 2022 presidential election.
During a party meeting, PPP floor leader Rep. Choo Kyung-ho stated, "We cannot agree with it. It is an unconstitutional wicked bill meant to shield Chairman Lee Jae-myung and create the atmosphere to impeach the president."
Lee, the leader of the DP, is currently facing trial on various charges stemming from his tenure as mayor of Seongnam and governor of Gyeonggi Province.
Choo further criticized the DP's approach, asserting, "Targeting a certain individual and arguing for a special counsel probe into random allegations is unacceptable." He added that if the same method were applied to propose a special counsel investigation into Lee Jae-myung, the PPP could compile 130 items for investigation, in contrast to the 13 items the DP seeks to investigate regarding the first lady.

주요 야당인 더불어민주당은 목요일 이 법안을 제출했으며, 이는 윤석열 대통령의 거부권 행사로 인해 두 차례의 이전 법안이 폐기된 후 세 번째 제출이다.
새로운 법안은 김여사가 2022년 대통령 선거를 앞두고 남편에게 유리한 여론조사를 실시하기 위해 자칭 정치 중개인인 명태균의 도움을 요청했다는 최근 의혹을 포함하여 특별검사 조사의 범위를 확대하고 있다.
국민의힘의 원내대표인 주경호 의원은 당 회의에서 "우리는 이에 동의할 수 없다"고 말했다. "이는 이재명 대표를 보호하고 대통령 탄핵의 분위기를 조성하기 위한 비헌법적 악법이다."
이 대표는 성남시장 및 경기도지사 재직 시절의 여러 혐의로 재판을 받고 있다.
주 의원은 "특정 개인을 대상으로 하여 무작위 의혹에 대한 특별검사 조사를 주장하는 것은 용납할 수 없다"고 강조했다.
이어 그는 "이재명 특별검사 조사 법안을 같은 방식으로 도입한다면, 13개가 아닌 130개의 조사 항목을 마련할 수 있을 것"이라고 덧붙였다. 이는 민주당이 김여사 관련 조사를 원하는 13개 항목을 언급한 것이다.
