Prosecution closes 'Dior bag' case amid opposition uproar

First lady Kim Keon Hee recently made headlines at a lunch event celebrating the return of Team South Korea from the 2024 Paralympic Games by facing the national flag at Cheong Wa Dae in Seoul. Despite the high-profile case surrounding her alleged acceptance of a luxury handbag captured on a hidden camera, the prosecution has decided to close the case without charging anyone involved, including the giver and the taker of the expensive gifts totaling 5 million won. The prosecution concluded that the gifts offered to the first lady had no connection to the president's duties and that there were no violations of antigraft or antibribery laws. Additionally, the current antigraft law does not specify the punishment for a public official's spouse, making Kim immune to prosecution. The decision by the prosecution has sparked criticism from political opponents of President Yoon Suk Yeol, with accusations that justice is being compromised in favor of those in power. Opposition lawmakers have expressed concern over the lack of consequences for Kim's actions, such as her involvement in state affairs and alleged intervention in political party matters. President Yoon's veto of bills aimed at investigating his wife further adds to the controversy, with the opposition party pushing for an independent counsel probe despite his efforts to block such investigations. The ongoing political turmoil underscores the tensions surrounding accountability and transparency in South Korean governance.
