Prosecutors have reiterated their demand for a fine of 3 million won ($2,174) against Kim Hye-kyung, the wife of opposition leader Lee Jae-myung, in connection with allegations of providing free meals to several individuals prior to the 2021 party election for a presidential candidate.
During a closing hearing held on October 24 at the Suwon District Prosecutors Office, the prosecution asserted that Kim violated election laws by offering meals valued at 104,000 won to the spouses of three former and current party lawmakers, as well as three aides, at a restaurant in Seoul in August 2021. This occurred shortly after Lee announced his candidacy for the 2022 presidential election.
The meals in question were reportedly charged to a corporate card from the Gyeonggi regional government, where Lee served as mayor. The prosecutors maintained that the severity of the alleged offense is significant, emphasizing that it was intended to garner support from influential politicians for her husband's campaign.
Kim Hye-kyung has denied the allegations, claiming that she believed the diners would cover the cost of the meals themselves and was unaware that a corporate card was being utilized for the payment.
The court had originally set the sentencing date for August 13; however, it has since been postponed to November 14 to accommodate five additional hearings.

수원지검은 선거법 위반 혐의로 김혜경에 대한 결심 공판에서 이와 같은 벌금을 요구했다.
김혜경은 2021년 8월, 이 대표가 2022년 대선 후보 선출을 위한 출마를 선언한 직후 서울의 한 음식점에서 전·현직 당 의원 세 명과 자신의 보좌관 세 명에게 10만 4천 원 상당의 식사를 제공한 혐의로 기소되었다.
이 식사는 이 대표가 시장으로 재직 중인 경기도청의 법인 카드로 결제된 것으로 알려졌다.
300만 원의 벌금 요구는 이전 7월 25일 공판에서 검찰이 김혜경에게 요구했던 것과 같은 액수이다.
검찰은 금액의 중요성과 무관하게 이 사건이 심각한 범죄라며, 김혜경이 남편을 위해 영향력 있는 정치인들의 지지를 사기 위해 노력했다고 주장했다.
김혜경 측은 그녀가 식사를 제공한 사람들이 각자 지불한다고 믿었으며 법인 카드 사용에 대해 알지 못했다고 혐의를 부인하고 있다.
법원은 이 사건에 대한 선고를 처음에 8월 13일로 예정했으나, 추가 공판 다섯 건을 추가한 뒤 11월 14일로 연기하였다.
