Prosecutors on Thursday reaffirmed their demand for a fine of 3 million won ($2,174) against Kim Hye-kyung, the wife of opposition leader Lee Jae-myung, on charges of providing free meals to several individuals ahead of the 2021 party election for the presidential candidate.
The Suwon District Prosecutors Office made this request during the closing hearing on allegations of election law violations. Kim was indicted for providing meals worth 104,000 won to the wives of three former and current party lawmakers, as well as three aides, at a restaurant in Seoul in August 2021, shortly after Lee declared his candidacy for the 2022 presidential race.
The meals were allegedly charged to a corporate card from the Gyeonggi regional government, where Lee served as mayor. The proposed fine remains consistent with what prosecutors sought during a previous hearing on July 25.
Prosecutors emphasized that the alleged crime is significant "regardless of the amount of money involved," as it was purportedly aimed at garnering support from influential politicians for Lee.
Keen to defend against the charges, Kim's representatives contended that she believed the diners had paid for their meals separately and that she was unaware that a corporate card had been used.
Originally, the court scheduled the sentencing for Aug. 13; however, it has since been postponed to Nov. 14 after adding five additional hearings.

이 식사는 이재명이 시장으로 재직 중이던 경기도의 법인 카드를 통해 결제된 것으로 전해졌다.
300만 원의 벌금 청구는 이전 7월 25일 심리에서 검찰이 김씨에게 요구한 것과 동일하다.
검찰은 이 사건의 중대성을 강조하며, "금액과 관계없이" 그녀가 남편의 지지를 얻기 위해 영향력 있는 정치인들에게 접근하려 했기 때문에 범죄가 중대하다고 주장했다.
김씨의 측은 혐의를 부인하며, 식사는 별도로 식사한 사람들이 결제했다고 믿었고 법인 카드 사용에 대해 알지 못했다고 주장했다.
법원은 이 사건의 선고를 처음에 8월 13일로 예정했으나, 추가 심리를 다섯 차례 더 진행하기로 하여 11월 14일로 변경했다.
