Prosecutors demand 3-yr prison term for opposition leader over alleged perjury subornation

Prosecutors have requested a three-year prison sentence for opposition leader Lee Jae-myung for allegedly persuading a former mayoral secretary to provide false testimony in his favor during a 2018 court case. Lee, who currently chairs the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), was indicted on charges of pressuring the secretary of a former Seongnam Mayor to give false testimony in a case related to a 2018 election law violation. The court is set to announce its verdict on November 25. The case involves Lee's prior conviction in 2004 for posing as a prosecutor in collaboration with a TV news producer to gather information on a scandal involving the then Seongnam Mayor. Despite being acquitted in 2020, Lee now faces accusations of influencing the former mayor's secretary to provide favorable testimony during a court trial in December 2018. Prosecutors argue that such actions disrupt the judicial order and create societal confusion, emphasizing the severity of the charges against Lee. If convicted, Lee could face disqualification from seeking public office and other penalties, as he is currently involved in multiple legal proceedings related to corruption and election fraud allegations.
