The tension between the two largest political parties in South Korea escalated Monday as the main opposition criticized the Yoon Suk Yeol administration's response to a recent series of provocations from North Korea.
The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea announced the list of members for its own intra-party security committee through former director of the National Service Intelligence Rep. Park Jie-won. This announcement follows Democratic Party Chair Rep. Lee Jae-myung's order to launch the committee, citing a lack of emergency security checks at the government level regarding claims that drones entered Pyongyang's airspace, and insufficient public explanation, according to Rep. Kim Min-seok, a member of the party's Supreme Council.
North Korea intensified its provocations on Monday after its Foreign Ministry claimed that the South had infiltrated Pyongyang with drones carrying propaganda leaflets three times this month. The South's Defense Ministry has yet to confirm these claims, citing strategic issues, but warned that Pyongyang would face "the end of its regime" if it threatens the lives of South Korean citizens.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that North Korea appears to be preparing to carry out explosions on roads connecting the divided Koreas, shortly after Pyongyang announced it would completely cut off all such roads and railways. The North Korean military has ordered artillery units along the border to be fully prepared to open fire, according to the Korean Central News Agency.
During a Democratic Party Supreme Council meeting on Monday, Rep. Kim Min-seok urged the government to respond appropriately to the escalating threats from the North. He expressed concern over the government's failure to control the propaganda leaflets sent across the border, which he argued has led to retaliatory actions from the North.
Since late May, North Korea has launched thousands of balloons carrying trash toward South Korea in retaliation against anti-Pyongyang propaganda leaflets sent by activists in the South. In response, the South's military has been broadcasting daily anti-North Korean propaganda through loudspeakers along the border since July.
Meanwhile, ruling People Power Party Chair Han Dong-hoon criticized Democratic Party Rep. Choo Mi-ae's calls for the Yoon administration to resolve inter-Korean tensions through diplomacy rather than military drills. Choo emphasized the need for political resolution and dialogue on social media.
In response, Han stated during a party leadership meeting that military training is essential for protecting South Korea from its enemies, questioning the effectiveness of diplomatic negotiations in ensuring national security. He asserted that the public, regardless of political affiliation, desires a government that prevents war and strengthens security through robust military training.

5월 말 이후, 북한은 남한의 반북 전단에 대한 보복으로 수천 개의 쓰레기 풍선을 남한 쪽으로 발사했다. 북한의 풍선에 대응하여, 남한 군대는 7월부터 국경 근처에서 매일 반북 전단 방송을 해왔다.
한편, 여당인 국민의힘 한동훈 대표는 월요일 민주당 추미애 의원이 일요일 윤 정부에 군사 훈련 대신 외교를 통해 남북 간의 긴장을 해결할 것을 촉구한 것에 대해 비판했다.

이에 대해 한 대표는 월요일 당 지도부 회의에서 "적과 함께 아닌 우리의 적으로부터 (남한을) 어떻게 보호할 수 있겠느냐, 북한과의 치밀한 거래를 통해 국민을 보호하겠다는 말인가?"라고 반문했다.
"우리 국민은 정치적 소속에 관계없이 (정부가) 전쟁을 예방하고 강력한 훈련을 통해 안전을 강화하기를 원한다"고 그는 말했다.
